“Fatherland” tells the story of the relationship between Thomas Mann (Hanns Zischler), the Nobel Prize–winning author, and his daughter Erika (Sandra Hüller), an actress and writer. Set at the height of the Cold War, the film follows father and daughter on a challenging, deeply emotional journey in a black Buick across war-ravaged Germany—from American-controlled Frankfurt to Soviet-controlled Weimar. For the first time since the end of World War II, Mann returns to his homeland after having made the difficult decision to emigrate to the United States years earlier.
