Silesian Voivodeship Office in Katowice

Budynek Urzędu Wojewódzkiego

The public utility building was built between 1925 and 1929. The historic edifice is located in an  inner center of the city. It was designed and built in the modernistic style and has got seven floors: five above ground and two underground. There are 1,300 windows and number of corridors amounts to 6 kilometers. There are 634 rooms with a total area of 161,474 m2.

We can distinguish following halls in the edifice:

– the Parliament Hall– there are 260 seats. Its central place is a marshal’s platform with lavishly decorated chairs. In 1920s it was used as a model for the Parliament House in Warsaw,

– the Marble Hall– built in monumental Nazi architecture style, once the place of formal meetings and balls

– the Panelling Hall (Sala Boazeryjna)- restored in 1990s, has regained its original look. Formerly it served as a voivode’s private parlour thanks to its lush interior and extraordinary atmosphere, now it is a place for top-level meetings,

– treasury which walls protected so called Silesian Treasure in the interwar period

– subway that serves as an escape route for dignitaries; it runs under the Silesian Voivodeship Office to Ligonia Street

– bunker which was transformed from one of the cellars during the World War II

In the building we can mostly find artificial lighting but because of numerous windows it is possible to shoot with available light.  The Silesian Voivodeship Office is a perfect place not only for political shots but also historical ones. It surely will be an inspiration for many filmmakers thanks to its characteristic look.

The building was used in the film “Śmierć Marszałka” [The Marshal’s death] in the 2nd series of “Sensacje XX wieku” programme [Sensations of the 20th century]. The building imitated the places from Moscow and Berlin.
