The Błędów Desert
Dąbrowa Górnicza
Description
It is the largest accumulation of loose sands, of an area of 33 km2, in Poland. The desert is situated on a border of the Silesian Highlands and the Olkusz Highlands.
The desert is 10 km long and 4 km wide. Strata of sand amount to 40-70 meters. The desert is crossed by the Biała Przemsza River.
A beautiful and extraordinary landscape was noticed and appreciated in a screen version of the film ‘Pharaoh’ by Bolesław Prus, directed by Jerzy Kawalerowicz.
Due to engineering works connected with a project concerning the protection of desert’s nature, the southern part of the desert will be closed to December, 2013.
