LOVE IN TIMES OF COAL-BASED ECONOMY

• 1962, Silesia, one of the coldest winters of the century. In the coal loading bay at a nearby mine, we meet Zbyszek at a critical moment in his life. Unrequited love leads him to a suicide attempt. It is then that, thanks to a television voiceover, the idea of life enchanted in coal becomes part of his life with obsessive force.

CANDIDATES OF DEATH

• The decade-long process of creation of an amateur horror film under the mysterious title Candidates of Death by a group of friends becomes the starting point for discreet observation of their adolescence, first successes, but also failures. The film will tell the story of a group of four wacky enthusiasts who, while making horror films, believed in the power of amateur cinema created out of passion which helps to live and grow.

I, KAYA - A GIRL FROM SILESIA

I, Kaya - a girl from Silesia tells the story of Kaya Mirecka - Ploss (real name: Hanna Adela Czech), a Polish women, now aged 96, born in Piekary Śląskie. Sławomir Grünberg the scriptwriter and director of the film, focuses on the uniqueness, steadfastness and charisma of Kaya, which allowed her not only to change the life of the Polish diaspora in the USA, but also to bring 105 Polish children to the United States, provide them with a window on the world and shape their world view.

THE FILM ODYSSEY

• Twelve-year old Jeremi, who is fascinated by modern technology and film, is given mysterious tasks, which form successive stages of the film. Everyone believes that he won a NASA competition and will be able to send a few items of his choice to space in a time capsule.

THE CURSE / KLĄTWA

A cartoon telling a twisted story about two creatures living in seemingly unrelated realities. The characters have no idea that their absurd behaviour has a great influence on the worlds they live in. A carefree and chilled life for one is a struggle for survival for the other.

SONNY

The film tells a very subtle story of the tough love between a father and his son and the ongoing struggle for freedom. Marcin – the protagonist – was badly hurt by parents. At the age of twelve, he was placed in an orphanage because of their alcohol dependence. Despite many bad experiences, after coming of age, he decided to return to his father and try to build a relationship with him again.

WOMEN IN KIOSK

A documentary portrait of two women and their relationship – a daughter-in-law and mother-in-law. Both are wronged by fate and try to find their place in the world. It is a film about discovering deeply hidden feelings and human inner transformation. It emphasises the need of giving love to people who need it, although they have denied it themselves for a very long time.

INTERIOR

The life of 35-year-old Maciek is colourless. He works from dusk till dawn in order to repay his mortgage. One day, he risks everything and sets on a journey with no purpose. At the same time, 35-year-old Magda co-organises the preparations for a certain anniversary. Their fates cross.

Mr. Jones

A young journalist, Gareth Jones, when preparing for the subject of an abrupt modernisation of the Soviet Union, leaves for Moscow. In the city, he finds a lead on a case of the Great Famine on Ukraine concealed by Soviet censors. Wishing to discover the truth, he sets on a lonely journey up to the source of the problem, where he experiences himself the tragedy the Holodomor.
